Weekly Pass/Fail Fitness Challenges With Friends

Quick answer

A weekly Pass/Fail fitness challenge gives everyone the same Monday–Sunday target — for example 2 miles of running — and scores each week as pass or miss. Meryus tracks every person’s week history on one grid, counts passes out of weeks completed, and works with Garmin auto-sync or a quick manual log. Strava auto-sync is paused for now (paid developer fees — boo); Garmin and manual logging are the free path.

A group that wants to stay active does not always need a 100-mile month. Sometimes the ask is simpler: hit a small weekly bar, every week, and show the receipts. That is what a weekly Pass/Fail challenge is for.

This format showed up because real friend and club groups already think in weeks. Roughly fifty runners wanted the same recurring accountability: did you clear the bar this week, yes or no. A single cumulative total hides that story. A Monday-to-Sunday grid does not.

Why weekly Pass/Fail beats a big month total

Cumulative challenges reward front-loading. Someone can crush week one, disappear for two weeks, then "catch up" and still look fine on a total leaderboard. Weekly Pass/Fail resets the question every Monday:

  • Did you hit the bar this week?
  • How many weeks have you cleared so far?
  • Who is still in it this week?

That is clearer for accountability groups, run clubs, and workplace crews who meet on a weekly rhythm anyway.

How it works on Meryus

  1. Create a challenge and pick a metric (running miles, gym sessions, cycling minutes, steps, whatever you actually do).
  2. Set a goal amount and choose Every week (Pass/Fail) instead of Total over challenge.
  3. Weeks run Monday to Sunday. Hit the goal that week and you pass. Miss it and that week is a miss. The current week stays in progress until Sunday.
  4. Invite with an 8-character join code. Everyone lands on the same challenge.
  5. Open the challenge to see a per-person historical week grid, your passes / total weeks, and how many members passed the current week.

Logging still works the normal way: connect Garmin so matching activities fill in, or enter the number by hand in a few seconds. Friends on mixed devices stay on one board.

Concrete examples

2 miles running per week (Pass/Fail)

A gentle bar that still forces the shoes to leave the house. Ideal for a mixed-pace group or a club that wants consistency over heroics. Create it as running, miles, goal 2, Every week (Pass/Fail). Template: 2 miles running per week.

20 miles a week for a run crew

Same mechanic, higher volume. The grid makes it obvious who is banked for the week and who still needs a long run by Sunday.

3 gym sessions per week

Count sessions, not PRs. Fair across fitness levels. Pass means you showed up three times; miss means you did not.

150 active minutes per week

Good for cycling crews or mixed cardio groups. Minutes are easier to compare than distance when bikes and runners share a board.

40,000 steps per week

A weekly step floor without obsessing over a daily 10K. Quiet weekdays can still recover on the weekend inside the same Monday–Sunday window.

Rules that keep a large group honest

  • One metric, one unit, one weekly number. No secret multipliers.
  • Agree that manual logs count. Mixed devices are the point.
  • Keep the group private unless everyone wants a public link.
  • Decide up front whether the challenge has an end date or runs open-ended. Pass/Fail still scores week by week either way.
  • Treat the grid as motivation, not a courtroom. Late syncs update the week when the data arrives.

Garmin sync, manual logging, and Strava (paused)

Garmin is the primary automatic path. Connect once from your profile and matching activities or health data can update the challenge. Anyone else logs manually.

Strava auto-sync is paused right now. Strava started requiring a paid developer subscription for apps like ours. (Boo.) Your free options on Meryus are Garmin and manual logging — and the Pass/Fail grid does not care which one you used, as long as the week clears the bar.

Profile tip (small): after you set a nickname and color, hit Save so the name next to your week row sticks the way you expect.

Start one this week

Pick a number your least consistent friend can clear on a busy week. Create a free Meryus challenge, choose Every week (Pass/Fail), share the join code, and let the grid do the nagging.
