Garmin Connect Group Challenges: Limits and Fixes

Quick answer

Garmin Connect group challenges only include Garmin users and only use preset step or distance formats. There is no custom goal, no sleep or HRV challenge, and no link you can share outside Garmin. Garmin data can instead sync into a dedicated challenge app so friends on other devices can compete too.

Garmin Connect has group challenges built in. They are decent if your whole group lives in the Garmin world. The moment one friend uses a different watch, things get messy.

Here is what Garmin actually supports and what to do when it is not enough.

What Garmin Connect group challenges support

  • Step challenges (most popular)
  • Distance challenges for running, cycling, swimming
  • Active minutes
  • Custom date ranges in some formats
  • Friend connections and basic leaderboards

For Garmin-only friend groups, this is genuinely useful and free with the device.

Where it gets limiting

Garmin-only

This is the same wall Strava clubs hit. Garmin challenges count Garmin data. If your training partner is on a Coros, an Apple Watch, or has gone back to logging on paper, they cannot join. We compare the device situation in detail in Apple Watch vs Garmin vs Strava for group challenges.

For families and friend groups that span devices, this is the main reason challenges fall apart.

Format is fixed

Garmin picks the available challenge types. If you want a creative format (push-ups, daily sleep consistency, total elevation toward a virtual mountain), you cannot build it inside Garmin Connect. The 27 challenge ideas list has plenty of formats Garmin cannot run.

Leaderboards live inside the app

Sharing progress with someone who does not use Garmin means screenshots. Not a deal breaker, but it slows the social side of a challenge.

Sync delays and missing activities

Garmin Connect itself is reliable, but indoor activities, manually started watches, and edge cases sometimes do not feed into challenges the way you would expect. Most users figure this out only after losing a week of progress.

How to use Garmin Connect plus a layer on top

You do not need to abandon Garmin. The setup that works for mixed groups:

  1. Keep recording every workout on your Garmin watch like normal
  2. Connect Garmin once to a tool that aggregates across apps
  3. Friends on other devices connect their own apps or log manually
  4. One leaderboard, everyone counted

Meryus does exactly this. Garmin activities flow in automatically. Strava users connect Strava. Anyone else logs manually. All three feed the same challenge. See the best apps for group fitness challenges for how the options compare.

When Garmin's own challenges are the right answer

  • Everyone in the group wears Garmin
  • You only want step or distance challenges
  • You are happy staying inside the Garmin Connect app

For everything else, run the challenge on a layer that does not care what watch you wear.
